Sonoran governor proposes creation of state-run private security force

Sonora’s Gov. Alfonso Durazo is proposing the creation of a state-run private security force.

As described by Durazo, the force would be under the state public security department and would provide paid security services to private businesses. The new body would be similar to the federal protective service, according to the governor.

He said this could free up other police forces from the distraction of having to respond to exceptional security situations at private facilities. He specifically mentioned the possibility of mining companies being customers of the service.

Asked about the proposal this week, he said the body would complement — not compete with — privately owned security companies.
