How concerns about the economy affect the world of college sports

The World Bank predicts economic growth in the United States to be 0.5% this year. The bank says growth in all of the world’s leading economies will slow in 2023. And that’s led to a lot of concern about the potential for a recession.

Economic downturns obviously affect most, if not all areas of life — including college sports.

This year, the Big Ten Conference will begin airing football games on several networks, as part of a new seven-year, $8 billion TV deal.

Conference realignment means teams are traveling farther from home, at a time of high inflation.

The Show checked in with Victoria Jackson, clinical assistant professor of history at Arizona State University, about what she’s seeing in terms of how economic pressures are affecting college sports.
