The University of Arizona is implementing new security measures to increase campus safety. The changes come after a UA professor was shot and killed by a former grad student in October.
All incoming graduate assistants and associates will undergo criminal background checks per the new safety enhancements. Currently, only assistants or associates in security-sensitive jobs or those who disclose past felony convictions are screened.
Among the measures, students and employees will be automatically registered to receive emergency alerts via email or phone.
UA President Robert Robbins recently announced the changes and said an independent, expert review of campus safety is ongoing.
Hydrology Professor Tom Meixner was fatally shot while teaching Oct. 5. The man charged in the crime is set for trial this summer.
