AZ House education committee passes bill to expand private school tax credit to foster students

The state House Education Committee passed a bill that expands eligibility for students in foster care to receive student tuition organization scholarships.

Those organizations provide tax credit programs for private school tuition for some students, where those in foster care have previously not been explicitly included.

Save our Schools co-founder Sharon Kirsch spoke against the measure, saying it would be redundant.

"Foster youth are already eligible for our ESA Vouchers to go to a private school of their choice. They can qualify for, depending on their needs, up to almost $40,000 depending on the child," Kirsch said.

Others speaking against the bill said there isn’t enough funding. The bill now goes to the Rules Committee before the House floor.
