The Food and Drug Administration is asking a judge to stop a bid by a Scottsdale-based law firm to block public access to a pregnancy terminating drug.
Attorneys for the FDA say the lawsuit from the Alliance Defending Freedom contains speculative allegations of harm without merit.
The Alliance, which says it was founded to defend Christian values in court, argued that medically induced abortions are unsafe.
Mifepristone and Misoprostol are part of a two drug method used in nearly half of abortion treatments in Arizona.
If successful, the lawsuit would only leave surgical options or birth for patients.
The FDA says that issuing a preliminary injunction would cause significant harm as it would deprive patients of a safe and effective drug that has been on the market for more than two decades.
No date is set for a hearing.
