When Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs released her executive budget last month, it included funds to establish an Educator Retention Task Force.
On Thursday, Hobbs put out an executive order to do just that.
Hobbs is creating the task force in an effort to address what she calls a “retention crisis.”
The governor and her team will hold regular meetings with stakeholders and conduct surveys in hopes of understanding why Arizona teachers leave their positions.
“There are too many amazing professionals who had to leave a career they love because of the uncompetitive salaries, onerous policies, and unfunded mandates that rob educators of the joy of teaching," Hobbs said in a press release.
She also referenced a report from the National Education Association which ranks Arizona 44th in the nation for average teacher salaries.
