Rising hotel prices ahead of Super Bowl raise difficulties for unsheltered people

Demand for hotel rooms has skyrocketed due to this weekend’s Super Bowl, and prices have as well.

Even low-budget Motel 6 prices are running about $500 per night, and some Holiday Inn Express rates are going for more than triple that.

Austin Davis with the AZ Hugs for the Houseless says that’s putting a burden on the unhoused.

“These folks are already kind of balanced on a razor's edge, you know, just keeping their heads above water. And every couple of days now as we inch closer and closer to the Super Bowl, the prices of these motels are going up exponentially,” he said.

Davis added that hotels often provide temporary housing for individuals who are securing more permanent shelter.
