This author says motherhood in America is unsustainable, and the pandemic made it worse

Jessica Grose has spent much of career writing about motherhood.

She writes the parenting newsletter for the New York Times, and now she has a new book out that dives unflinchingly into the roots of what she calls the unsustainability of American motherhood.

The book is aptly titled "Screaming on the Inside: The Unsustainability of American Motherhood."

It documents not just her own experience of failing at motherhood before she even began — but the morally bankrupt system that led her there.

The Show spoke with her about it and about how far back these ideas about ideal motherhood go in American history.
