Sonora is among 10 northern Mexican states that will receive federal funds to boost public security. The state set to receive some $20.2 million to strengthen state and local policing and other programs.
Interior Secretary Adan Lopez says the funds are meant to help guarantee security by carrying out a national public safety strategy at the state level.
The funds are to be used for training, certification and professionalization of state and municipal police forces. Violence and crime prevention and programs aimed at vulnerable youth are also among the priorities.
Gov. Alfonso Durazo said his government will use the funds to restore peace in a state that has seen high levels of violent crime in recent years, particularly in a handful of municipalities where murder rates continue to risedespite a modest overall drop in homicides last year.
