Five months after former head resigned, Sonora searching commission lacks full-time leader

Sonoran officials say they are upping efforts to replace the head of the state’s missing persons search commission. Citizen led searching groups will be included in the decision.

There are officially some 4,500 disappeared people in Sonora. Across Mexico, more than 110,000 people remain missing.

The head of the commission charged with finding them in Sonora resigned last August. Gov. Alfonso Durazo says his government has not yet been able to fill the vacancy, in part because of conflicting preferences among the state’s various searching groups that the commission leader would be tasked with supporting.

Durazo said he wants to appoint a consensus pick to the post.

He acknowledged that the current interim leader — the son of a missing person - does not have the academic background required for the job, which includes significant experience in forensic anthropology.
