In recent years, the Mexican state of Sonora has hosted international sporting events including baseball and volleyball championships. This year, it will be archery.
Hermosillo is set to host the 2023 Archery World Cup finals in September.
The five-stage tournament starts in April, with archers competing in Turkey, China, Colombia and France before the top 32 contenders — eight in each championship category — face off in Hermosillo.
Ana Gabriela Guevara, head of the national sporting commission, says the event will have a festival-like feel and attract international tourism and attention to the state.
It’s also a chance, she says, to show off Mexico’s talented archers. They include Sonoran Olympic medalist Alejandra Valencia, who took bronze in the 2020 games in Tokyo and is expected to reach this year’s world cup finals in her hometown.
As the event host, Mexico has the right to compete with at least four archers, one in each category.
