Arizona Senate committee passes a bill that could eliminate voting centers

The Arizona Senate Elections Committee has passed a bill,  Senate Bill 1140, popular with legislative Republicans that would eliminate voting centers, and replace them with more neighborhood-based precincts.

Jodi Liggett with the League of Women Voters says their organization opposes the bill.

"Our members feel that the elimination of voting centers may mean more polling places need to be staffed, this will drive up costs. Our members tell us that they believe vote centers enhance civic engagement and that turnout is increased," Liggett said.

The difference between a voting center and a polling place is that eligible voters may go to ANY center within their registered county–a polling place is assigned to each individual voter.

Liggett says voting centers are a proven method for conducting elections.
