The Arizona Diamondbacks open their spring training schedule on Saturday, when they take on the Oakland A’s.
And earlier this month, the D-backs unveiled their new jersey patch sponsor. In other words, which company would pay to place an ad on their uniform sleeves.
Valley tech firm Avnet is the sponsor, and the ads will be worn starting this season.
This is the first year Major League Baseball teams can sell ads on jerseys, and the Diamondbacks are one of a handful who have so far announced they’re doing so, or that they plan to.
The Show spoke about this with Paul Lukas — founder and editor of Uni Watch, which focuses on sports uniform and logo design — and asked how we got to the point that some MLB teams will have ads on their jerseys.
