New trial date set for polygamous sect leader on Arizona-Utah border

A trial set for a polygamous sect leader charged for kidnapping, child abuse and evidence tampering has been postponed until 2024.

A judge granted postponement after prosecutors said they expect more charges to be filed in the next three months. It was originally scheduled for March.

Now Samuel Bateman is scheduled to be tried March 5 next year.

Bateman has pleaded not guilty to the federal and state charges.

Federal authorities have accused Bateman of taking more than 20 wives, including underage girls. Though he does not currently face any charges directly related to that accusation.

Bateman lived in Colorado City on Arizona’s border with Utah and remains jailed until his trial.
