AZ Senate rejects bill that would have removed cities' ability to adopt charters

A bill stripping cities of their right to adopt charters has failed in the Arizona Senate.

Those charters allow cities to have an amount of local authority on matters ranging from election dates, to how they elect council members.

Democratic Sen. Priya Sundareshan opposed the bill.

"This is an attempt to ensure when the Legislature passes state preemptions and repressive policies that they apply to every single charter city," she said.

The bill would have asked voters in 2024 to amend the state constitution if it had passed the Legislature.
