As Maricopa County evictions rise, one nonprofit imagines better options for Arizona

Eviction rates are going back up in Maricopa County.

Data from Eviction Lab show filings in Phoenix in January were 23% higher than average. That amounted to more than 7,000 evictions.

The numbers are higher than during the pandemic, when there was a moratorium on evictions and are approaching levels not seen since 2008, at the time of the Great Recession.

The Show talked about why that is and what can be done about it with Maxine Becker, an attorney focusing on housing policy at Wildfire, a statewide anti-poverty nonprofit. Becker talked about she’s seeing in terms of evictions and if the data from Maricopa County mesh with what she’s seeing on the ground.
