This week, several news outlets in Mexico detailed the military’s apparent hacking of a prominent human rights defender's phone.
The reports are damning. Based on secret military documents released as a part of a major hack of military records last year, several news outlets this week exposedhow Mexico’s military infected the phone of prominent Nuevo Laredo human rights activist Raymundo Ramos.
Nayeli Roldan with Animal Politico, one of the outlets that broke the story, asked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Friday whether the military carried out that work out without his knowledge, and if it constitutes domestic spying. López Obrador flatly denied the allegations.
Despite the detailed evidence presented by Roldan, the president insisted that his government “doesn’t spy on anybody.”
