Elvia Díaz: Matamoros killings should be a wake-up call to Americans

The Show regularly checks in with the Arizona Republic editorial board to talk about current issues facing the state and the region — featured in columns on the newspaper’s op-ed pages.

Details are still emerging about the tragic deaths of two Americans who crossed the border into Matamoros, Mexico, earlier this month. They were kidnapped and murdered, caught in the midst of cartel violence that had nothing to do with them.

Now, some conservatives in Washington are calling for a military invasion of Mexico. And many Mexicans are lamenting the fact that the intense efforts by Mexican authorities to rescue the surviving two Americans in this case are rarely used in cases when Mexican nationals go missing.

But whatever the fallout, Arizona Republic Editorial Page Editor Elvia Díaz says this violence should be a wake-up call to us all. She wrote a piece about it recently and joined The Show to talk more about it.
