Phoenix runoff election to decide 2 council seats

A runoff election for two council seats will take place in Phoenix on Tuesday.

In District 8, which includes parts of downtown, east Phoenix and south Phoenix, attorney Kesha Hodge Washington is challenging incumbent Carlos Garcia. Washington is backed by the mayor while Garcia has the support of his more left-leaning colleagues on the council.

In District 6, which includes Ahwatukee and parts of east and central Phoenix, current Councilman Sal DiCiccio is termed out. He supports his former chief of staff Sam Stone while Mayor Kate Gallego backs retired Phoenix police Officer Kevin Robinson.

Tuesday’s runoff election is required by law because no candidate received a majority of votes last November.

Voting centers will be open Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ten locations are on the Phoenix city website
