How the ban on housing discrimination has been working in Tucson

Earlier this month, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes reversed a decision by her predecessor allowing Tucson and Phoenix to go forward with bans on housing discrimination against those who accept housing assistance like Section 8 vouchers.

Tucson has had its ban on housing discrimination based on what’s called source of income in place for a few months now, and then this month, the Phoenix City Council followed suit. Proponents call it a win for the fight against the affordable housing crisis in the state because people on housing assistance often have a hard time finding landlords who will rent to them.

Liz Morales is the director of the Tucson Housing and Community Development Department and has overseen that city’s ban. The Show spoke with her more about how it’s worked there.
