A bill that would make it easier for legislators, election officers, and county officials to shield their home addresses and other personal information is advancing in the Arizona House.
It’s an effort by lawmakers to combat harassment and threats of violence they say have been made against them and their families. Republican Sen. T.J. Shope is the bill’s sponsor.
“There is a cost-benefit analysis that has to be done of how much intrusion you want into your daily and personal life when you run for office. However, our families don’t sign up for that," Shope said.
The executive director of the Arizona Association of Counties says the bill would not protect addresses in documents filed to prove a politician is eligible to serve in their area.
The bill unanimously passed in the House Government Committee and now goes to House Rules.
