Tempe looking to transform Apache corridor site

The city of Tempe is planning a mixed-use project that would bring affordable housing and a grocery store to Apache Boulevard near ASU’s main campus.

The city recently issued a request for proposal to transform the eight-acre site that once housed a now-shuttered Food City. Tempe Mayor Corey Woods said residents reached out with concerns about the closure.

“There are a couple of smaller markets that are currently along the Apache Boulevard corridor but nothing to the level of what the Food City was in terms of size and quantity," he said.

One project on the site would include 400 housing units, with half reserved for people with limited incomes.
