Sinema part of U.S. delegation that met with AMLO on migration, security issues

A delegation of U.S. lawmakers met with Mexico’s president over the weekend. The bipartisan group included Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.

Sinema was one of 12 U.S. Congress members who met with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and other top Mexican officials Saturday to discuss issues including migration, security and economic development.

One topic that was not on the agenda: a proposal by some Republican lawmakers to use the U.S. military to fight drug cartels in Mexico.

López Obrador said Monday that he’s made it clear that the idea is offensive to Mexico and says he’s confident such rhetoric is being spread by a small number of U.S. politicians for political gain.

He said the meeting was productive and respectful, and that leaders from both countries are committed to working together to address difficult issues, like curbing drug trafficking and consumption.
