Arizona lawmakers are moving to require all election equipment only be built with components made and assembled in the United States.
There are no voting machines that currently meet those specifications. So if passed, the bill wouldn’t kick in until 2028.
As written, the bill would not preclude machines and components made in domestic plants, but owned by foreign firms.
Proponents say that sourcing items from inside the country would make it easier to investigate potential problems with equipment.
Though some argue the bill is unrealistic, as its author does not know if there are American companies which can produce the equipment with such requirements.
The bill has already passed the House, and needs Senate approval.
