West Valley development to build 368 affordable housing units

A new West Valley construction project valued at $120 million broke ground Friday.

Called Centerline at Glendale, the development will eventually offer more than 350 affordable housing units, according to Jacqueline Edwards, director of the Maricopa County Human Services Department.

“There will be a priority given to folks who are between zero percent and 80% of Area Median Income. What that means is for a family of four, they cannot make any more than about $70,000 a year,” said Edwards.

Rents will range from about $500 to $1,800 per month depending on household income.

The project is expected to be completed in about two years. Funding comes from a mixture of federal, state and private equity funds.

Edwards said, “We know there is a housing crisis in our community, so facilitating affordable options is a priority for Maricopa County and that’s why we’ve invested $130 million into affordable housing solutions.”

$6 million of that figure in federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars from Maricopa County is specifically going into the West Valley project, according to Edwards. She said the other monies were allocated for projects that cover both rental properties and home ownership housing solutions and those investments will produce units that will become available this year through 2026.

Edwards said, “Centerline at Glendale will be a home specifically for individuals and families and finally offer the stability they need so they don’t have to have such a large portion of their budget to cover their housing.”
