Biggs votes no on Parents Bill of Rights in U.S. House vote

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed what’s known as the Parents Bill of Rights. In part, the measure would require schools to publish their curricula. Schools would also be required to give parents a list of reading materials in school libraries.

Arizona Congressman Andy Biggs was one of five Republicans to vote against it. He said if the bill were to become law, it would pass policy-setting power from local and state school boards to the federal government.

“They’ve empowered the federal government to take even broader control over your state and local school boards,” Biggs said. “That’s the reason I voted ‘no.’”

Biggs said he sees the bill as potentially making it harder to “defund, defang, and dissolve the Department of Education” and an intrusion of the federal government in local school districts.
