Nearly six months after a University of Arizona professor was shot and killed on the Tucson campus, the school has released an independent safety report.
Prof. of hydrology and atmospheric sciences Thomas Meixner was killed by a former student in October 2022.
UA President Robert Robbins spoke about the report in a Monday press conference.
He said the university can do better and takes responsibility for increased safety on campus, “There’s always a fine line that one tries to balance between someone’s civil liberties and their privacy versus the overall threat to the university campus. That one is very hard work and it takes detailed expertise to be able to do that.”
Robbins also said the university is revamping its threat assessment team after the group commissioned to conduct the study noticed deficiencies in managing threats.
According to the Associated Press, Robbins stated in the same press conference, “There were systemic issues across our university that should have been identified and corrected. I’m angry at myself that I did not do more to prevent this tragedy.”
