AZ House Education panel passes bill creating alternative restrooms for trans students

The Arizona House Education Committee passed a bill that would create alternative, single-person restrooms for transgender students.

It would also ban those students from using restrooms that do not align with their sex at birth.

Some Republicans argue the measure is a reasonable accommodation.

But Democratic Rep. and teacher Judy Schweibert says it targets a vulnerable community.

"It’s truly our transgender young people who are the ones most at risk of discrimination, of isolation, of being bullied, and even at risk of committing suicide," Schweibert said.

The measure has already passed the Senate, and moves on to the House Rules Committee.
