Maricopa County had the largest population growth of all counties in the United States between July 2021 and July 2022.
Maricopa County added 56,831 new residents in that timeframe.
The U.S. Census Bureau says the main reason was domestic migration. Immigration was relatively flat year over year.
More than half of the nation’s counties had population growth.
The bureau says counties that started with 10,000 people or less typically shrank, while the majority of those with at least 100,000 grew.
The new estimates seem to reverse the previous year’s trend where people were moving away from population centers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
