Sen. Kyrsten Sinema votes to repeal EPA protections for waterways that are mostly dry

U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema in April 2022.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, an independent, joined all Republicans and four Democrats in repealing protections for most of Arizona's waterways.

The resolution would block the EPA from putting protections on waterways that are normally dry, which is about 95% of Arizona’s rivers and streams.

Sandy Bahr with the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Sierra Club says they still have environmental benefits, such as providing flood protection.

"They help to feed our rivers that do flow year round. They help to prevent sedimentation, which is very bad for fish and other species," Bahr said.

President Joe Biden is expected to veto the bill.
