EPA proposes adding a Navajo Nation site to the national Superfunds Priorities List

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to add a former uranium mining area on the Navajo Nation to the Superfund National Priorities List.

The EPA wants to add the Lukachukai Mountains Mining District to the Superfund List.

It consists of more than 100 waste piles scattered over several regions in northeastern Arizona.

The agency notes it would be the first time a Navajo site was placed on the Superfund List. Former Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez had asked the EPA to place the site on its cleanup list.

It’s currently under a 60-day public comment period that ends May 30.
