Democrats begin campaigning in Arizona's 3rd Congressional District

Phoenix Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansari and state Sen. Raquel Terán have both announced their running for Congress in Arizona's 3rd Congressional District.

Ansari, who’s served on the Phoenix City Council since 2021, announced her entry into the race on Tuesday. Terán, who previously served as the chair of the Arizona Democratic Party, tweeted about her candidacy a day later.

There’s expected to be a crowded field of Democrats vying for the nomination in District 3, a left-leaning district considered a safe re-election bet for whoever holds the seat.

U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego is leaving the seat vacant to run for U.S. Senate.

And in CD1, state Rep. Amish Shah announced Monday he’ll run on the Democratic ticket in hopes of challenging Republican Congressman David Schweikert.

Schweikert, who narrowly defeated Democrat Jevin Hodge in 2022, is seen as a target for congressional Democrats.

Scottsdale orthodontist Andrew Horne is also running as a Democrat in District 1.
