New celebrity tequila brands are driving an agave shortage

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States reports tequila and mezcal sales jumped more than 17% last year, bringing the industry’s total revenue to $6 billion.

There are concerns about potential shortages of agaves, which are needed to make tequila. Theories about why range from climate change to supply chain issues related to the pandemic.

The Show talked about all of this with Grant Gardner, agave specialist for Barcoa Agaveria in Phoenix.
