New obesity guidelines for kids go much further than they have in the past

Earlier this year, the American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for treating patients with obesity. In some cases, they call for a more aggressive approach.

For children at least 12 years old who are in the 95th percentile for weight, the new guidelines suggest weight loss medication. Surgery is the recommendation for teens who have severe obesity.

The Show talked about all of this with Isabella Cueto, chronic disease reporter for STAT News, who has reported on the changes.
