AZ legislature passes bill that increases price transparency for hospital charges

A bill that is aiming to promote price transparency for hospital charges has passed both chambers of the Legislature.

The bill would direct the state Department of Health Services to annually verify hospitals comply with federal price transparency regulations.

The measure would also mandate the department post reports on its website with a list of hospitals that are found to be noncompliant.

Republican Sen. Janae Shamp drafted the proposal.

“One of the only industries out there that we participate in buying services from we don’t know the price to is health care," Shamp said.

Democratic Sen. Anna Hernandez joined others in opposing the measure, arguing that health care for everyone would be a better solution.

The bill now goes to Gov. Katie Hobbs’ desk.
