Elvia Díaz: Phoenix Councilmember Carlos Garcia went out fighting for the poor

The Show regularly checks in with the Arizona Republic editorial board to talk about current issues facing the state and the region — featured in columns on the newspaper’s op-ed pages.

Phoenix City Councilmember Carlos Garcia lost his bid for reelection in his south Phoenix district last month to a more centrist candidate, Kesha Hodge Washington, who was also backed by Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.

But he didn’t go quietly. At his last council meeting last week, he and Gallego went head-to-head after she voted not to allow public comment from mobile home residents who are about to be evicted from their homes for redevelopment.

The council voted earlier against a moratorium that would have given them more time before having to move.

Arizona Republic Editorial Page Editor Elvia Díaz says the moment crystalized Garcia’s role on the council as a voice of the poor and powerless. She wrote about it recently and joined The Show to discuss it.
