Terán resigns from AZ Senate to focus on congressional campaign

State Sen. Raquel Terán resigned on Thursday to focus on her new congressional campaign.

The Phoenix Democrat recently announced she’s running for the Democratic nomination in Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District. Current U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego is running for the U.S. Senate rather than seek re-election.

In a statement, Terán said it’s been “the honor of a lifetime” serving Legislative District 26.

“As I begin my next journey to support the people of Arizona, I extend my sincere thanks to the voters who trusted me, the staff who supported me, and colleagues who are fighting every day to make reality better in Arizona,” she added.

Terán is just one candidate in what’s expected to be a crowded field of Democrats vying for the nomination in District 3. Phoenix Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansari also announced her candidate last week.
