A nonprofit group in Flagstaff is converting a motel into short-term housing after receiving millions in state grant money from the Arizona Department of Housing.
This is the second motel that Flagstaff Shelter Services has bought and converted into housing. The organization has purchased a former Motel 6 in town that it will use to offer 103 rooms with private space for single adults, said Shelter Services Director Ross Schaefer.
"Folks will be allowed to stay as long as they’re working toward their housing plan and so that might look like a couple of nights for one person and it might look like a couple of months for somebody else or even longer," she said.
The shelter will be called the Lantern. It was made available through a $8.95 million grant that ultimately came from the American Rescue Plan Act. Schaefer expects to open late this summer.
The organization bought and converted a motel on Route 66 last summer using more than $6 million from the federal rescue act.
