The sale of foods made in people’s home kitchens will remain illegal in Arizona.
A vote to overturn Gov. Katie Hobbs’ veto of the sale of “cottage foods” failed to pass the state House.
The bill needed support from 40 of the 60 members in the chamber. It only got 35 lawmakers to vote for overturning the veto.
That is a significant departure from the original vote two weeks ago that initially passed the measure, which got 45 members to approve.
In vetoing the bill, Hobbs said such legislation would result in an increase in food-borne illness, as it didn’t provide a mechanism to ensure home kitchens maintain health standards.
Overturning a gubernatorial veto would require two-thirds from both the House and Senate to vote. The last override in Arizona was in 1981.
