ASU ranks 10th, UA 29th in global patent list

The National Academy of Inventors has released its list of the Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents for 2022.

Two of Arizona’s state universities featured prominently.

ASU placed 10th for inventions that include foldable quadcopter drones, power-generating building bricks and systems to remove precious metals from wastewater.

The Sun Devils fell two spots compared to last year, despite posting seven more patents, possibly because this year’s list counted all patent owners, not just the first-listed.

UA HAD six patents more than last year to hold on to 29th place. Examples include a technique for imaging cancer cells, a wearable 3D augmented reality display and an antioxidant sunscreen.

Both universities boast substantial technology transfer organizations to safeguard intellectual property and negotiate deals with commercial partners.
