As Arizona learns to cope with less water from the Colorado River, policy makers have begun to spotlight the state’s groundwater supply, and a nonprofit has released a new poll that reflects those concerns.
The survey says that about three quarters of Arizona voters would like to see some form of groundwater stewardship in rural parts of the state.
Those areas have little or no protection, and some of them have watched as corporate agricultural interests have moved in to take advantage of the lack of oversight.
A number of legislators have introduced bills to address the problem, only to watch them die in committee.
The poll was conducted by the Environmental Defense Action Fund and endorsed by the Water for Arizona coalition.
