Mexico’s president has sent a letter directly to his U.S. counterpart expressing concern that the United States government gives funding to groups he considers opposition.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador passed the letter addressed to President Joe Biden to White House officials during a meeting earlier this week about immigration policy.
The letter calls for the US Agency for International Development, known as USAID, to stop funding groups he believes oppose his administration.
He called the funds an act of interference and interventionism.
This is the second time López Obrador asked USAID to stop funding groups in Mexico. In 2021, he complained that the nonprofit Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity was receiving U.S. support. This year, the free speech advocate Article 19 was among the groups he wanted to see defunded.
