Valley Metro riders may potentially see the light rail making new stops in Phoenix in the future. Officials are looking to expand services to take public transit users from downtown to the state Capitol.
Members of the public will have the opportunity to comment on this Valley Metro project that would extend the light rail. The extension would span 1.4 miles from Third to 19th avenues.
An in-person meeting will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Neighborhood Ministries in Phoenix. Anyone who can’t attend has the opportunity to make comments online through the Valley Metro website before the end of the month.
“I think reaching the public is the biggest priority right now and getting their input and it’s important for them to weigh in because while it is a little far off in the future, the planning is happening now," said Susan Tierney, the communications manager for Valley Metro.
According to Tierney, construction for the extension would occur after the completion of another expansion project known as South Central Extension/Downtown Hub.
“Well, as it turns out, the South Central Extension/Downtown Hub will be completed before we would start construction on this extension, but it is an important part because the two will tie into each other," she said.
For the newly proposed extension, she says officials will work with entities like the local community and law enforcement to serve people and make for safe traveling.
The current schedule projects designing and construction to begin in 2024.
