The U.S. Forest Service has announced it will spend more than $23 million on a backlog of maintenance projects in Arizona and New Mexico.
The funding will support 27 projects across the two states, including visitor access, land and water conservation, and recreation infrastructure.
The southwest region has 10 completed projects and 71 in development.
One example is ongoing work on Coronado National Forest’s Sky Island Trail system to improve drainage, clear brush and refurbish trails.
This is the latest allocation from the bipartisan 2020 Great American Outdoors Act, which provides five years of funding to tackle maintenance backlogs across the Forest Service, National Parks Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Indian Education.
