Why this region in Italy has the same tourism-related issues as Arizona

Tourism is a major industry in Arizona. The state Office of Tourism reports nearly 41 million people visited Arizona in 2021 and spent more than $23 billion while they were here.

But some worry about the impact of all those people traveling to the state — especially when it comes to natural and archaeological sites.

Author Jeff Biggers has been thinking about that, but not only as it relates to Arizona. Biggers grew up in southern Arizona; his newest book is called "In Sardinia: An Unexpected Journey in Italy." It turns out, some of the same tourism-related issues facing Arizona are also facing this island off the west coast of Italy.

Biggers will be at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe on Tuesday to talk about his book. The Show spoke with him about what drew him to Sardinia.
