Chiricahua National Monument is one of southern Arizona’s most scenic treasures, but like many such places in the state, it is managed as a national monument, not a park.
The U.S. Senate recently took a step to upgrade its status.
Although national monuments receive some protection, parks typically receive more funding and enjoy a higher profile, which can give local tourism a boost.
Arizona’s senators have introduced a bill to elevate the Chiricahuas to park status, and last week the bill passed in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
The measure, which has the support of local communities and the Cochise County Board of Supervisors, is now eligible for a vote on the Senate floor.
