Hobbs urges Biden to designate tribally proposed Grand Canyon monument

Coverage of tribal natural resources is supported in part by Catena Foundation

Arizona Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs has urged President Joe Biden to use the Antiquities Act to designate the proposed Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument.

In a letter to Biden this week, Hobbs said the Grand Canyon is a culturally sacred place stewarded by Indigenous peoples for centuries, and that she has heard bipartisan support for its designation.

The monument has been proposed by tribal groups to preserve the natural and cultural landscape, and protect the canyon’s water.
