Arizona Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs has said she is going to take another look at curbing the growth of universal private school vouchers.
That comes following a report from the Arizona Department of Education that projected the program would cost $900 million this year, 63% more than was projected.
Hobbs says that could give her leverage in negotiations.
"Obviously, this number wasn't published before the budget. And we have a different set of facts that we're dealing with now in terms of the actual cost," Hobbs said.
That cost is based on the department estimating 100,000 students to enroll in the program.
Though Legislative budget staffers cast doubts on that estimate, saying the methodology behind it was not made available.
