Pima County’s animal shelter is limiting the intake of dogs for a week, beginning Saturday. The shelter is trying to stop a surge of infectious disease.
The shelter is limiting intakes to emergency situations only, at the recommendation of lead veterinarian Jennifer Wilcox. Cases of distemper and other infectious diseases have been surging, and Wilcox said a “clean break” is needed to protect the animals.
The shelter will limit admissions to dogs in medical distress, those who pose a safety threat, and any situation involving an injury to humans or animals.
Despite the limitations, adoptions and foster services still remain available. And the shelter is offering free microchips and vaccines to incentivize adoptions.
Community members are urged to keep pets up to date on vaccines to help stop the spread of disease.
