Mexico’s Morena wins the governorship in the country’s most populous state

Mexico’s Morena political party had a historic win during elections in the country’s most populous state over the weekend. The Morena party will now hold the governorship in 23 of Mexico’s 32 states.

On Sunday, voters in the State of Mexico elected Delfina Gomez — a member of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Morena party — as the first woman to govern the state. She will also be the first governor since 1929 who is not a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or the PRI.

One of Mexico’s most important and longest-standing political parties, the PRI has rapidly lost control to newcomer Morena in recent years. That party now holds the presidency, has majorities in both houses of congress and governs more than two-thirds of Mexican states, including in Sonora, where Gov. Alfonso Durazo was elected in 2021.

Morena is also seen as the front-runner in next year’s presidential elections, even though the parties have not yet put forward nominees.
